Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy

What is the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy?

The Delta Academy is a national program for girls between the ages of 11 and 14, which provides opportunities for leadership through community service, encourages the cultivation and maintenance of relationships, augments scholarship in math, science and technology and builds self esteem.

A primary goal of the Academy is to prepare these young women for full participation in the 21ST century world.  Structured Meetings take place each month, where the group participates in activities that increase confidence, hone writing and speaking skills and interact with mentors. 

​

In addition, girls also attend field trips, participate in educational youth programs and volunteer for community service projects. Applications are available in September and the program runs from October to June of each year.  

​

The Delta Academy is designed for young women who meet the following criteria:

Is 11 to 14 years of age.

Demonstrates great academic and personal promise; lacks support and encouragement.

Shows interest in developing leadership skills.

Shows interest in community action and social change.

Shows interest in non-traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers.

DELTA GEMS

DELTA GEMS (Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully)

Dr. Jeanne L . Noble GEMS Institute is designed for young African-American women between the ages of 14 and 18 (or grades 9-12).  The program supports young women who have potential, but need guidance, support and skills to achieve success; young women who are interested in developing leadership skills; young women who are actively pursuing college and/or career options; and, young women who may need encouragement and support in pursuit of higher learning.
