Programs

Hayward-Tri-City Alumnae Chapter provides an extensive array of public service programs and projects through its Five-Point Program Thrust: Educational Development, Physical and Mental Health, International Awareness and Involvement, Political Awareness and Involvement and Economic Development.

Economic Development

National economic trends, such as unstable employment, the threat to Social Security as we know it, and the widening gap between wealth and poverty are the basis for the development of Financial Fortitude, the current Economic Development Program Initiative of Delta Sigma Theta. Financial Fortitude is a process that will help program participants to set and define goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and to put the plan into action. The process serves as a blueprint to address all aspects of personal finances.

We conduct financial fortitude workshops for chapter members. Topics include financial and debt management, home ownership, insurance, estate planning and retirement planning.

Educational Development

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy provides educational programs for at-risk young women between the ages of 11-14. It offers mentoring, e-service and educational learning opportunities to its participants. Our major emphasis is on science, leadership, technology and cultural enrichment and to help young women excel in these areas. Academy girls participate in events at Lawrence Livermore Labs, Cal Days at UC Berkeley, Mills College Math and Science Fair, the Museum of California and Delta Days at the Capitol.

We also provide financial support to worthy, local high school seniors, college students and late starters. Music on the Green, our annual scholarship fundraiser, has enabled us to provide over $15000 in financial scholarships. Our goal is to increase this amount by 20% each year.

Physical and Mental Health

Summit VI: Health Issues that Impact Women of African Descent is a national program designed to heighten awareness of the increasing incidence and mortality rates of diabetes, heart disease and obesity among African American women. Locally, the chapter has conducted a healthy living health fair which included and comprehensive screening programs, preventative in nature, to address these serious problems and healthy lifestyle sessions with the American Heart Association.

International Awareness and Involvement

In partnership with the Allen Temple Baptist Church AIDS Ministry, chapter members sort and pack much needed clothing and personal items destined for the Mother of Peace Orphanage in Zimbabwe.

Political Action and Awareness

Our major emphasis is voter registration and legislation affecting health, education, employment, childcare and international issues. To foster expanded involvement in social and public policy issues, we actively participate in an annual legislative conference held in Sacramento, CA.
